Has the potential of Miles Morales, Kamala Khan and Sam Alexander as a superhero trio ever been discussed at Marvel? Not just during ANAD Avengers and Champions books, but out on their own à la Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends?

That seems like a pretty good idea.

Considering the controversy that surrounded the "Captain America: Steve Rogers" series, is there anything you would change with hindsight? Or do you feel the general premise of the story would get that kind of reaction no matter what?

Yliaster's avatar

I'm going to be honest, I think most of the controversy came from people who either didn't read the comic or were reading it in bad faith. I had fun with it.

I enjoyed it too, though I didn't get into collecting comics until after the whole run was done so I knew that it got reversed.

Thank you for answering my question! I definitely do not think that stories should be changed and I don’t think creator’s do stories to piss off fans.

I prefer to enjoy what I purchase and I realize that Marvel or any other form of entertainment cannot please everyone at once.

Seeing the Brubaker Cap cover made me think of a conversation I had recently on our pod with House to Astonish’s Al Kennedy. We were talking about the journey of Zemo in Thunderbolts and how quickly it was undone in Brubaker’s Cap. Given you were Thunderbolts editor, how did you feel Zemo and to a lesser extent Bartoc, reverting back to villainy in the Cap book? This ties into the whole notion of rehabilitating bad guys I’ve mentioned in these comments before.

Interesting - I did not see it like that - I saw a thematic link to the Thunderbolts as Zemo was jealous that Bucky was getting the redemption that Zero never did with the public at large. So less of a villain and more of an antagonist (in his own weird fashion also unbalanced by trauma and mental illness).

In Exceptional x-men last issue iceman fought a clone himself and his last mini was mentioned too so that is something that might be brought up again in the issues to come or it was just something for that issue?

I've recently wondered if each of Bobby's duplicates can also be transformed into flesh and blood. Could Bobby teach someone like Rockslide how to do it by one of the telepaths linking them when Bobby returns to human form?

Expand full comment
Arthur's avatar

I kinda see the duplicates more like ice constructs tho but I could be mistaken, about rockslide, Bobby's ice form is his secondary mutation before that he only had a human form, meanwhile rockslide form is his first mutation maybe there's a difference between those cases

I loved Spencer’s runs on Cap and Spidey. Personally, I think the only reason Sam Wilson has prominence in the MCU is due to what Spencer did with him (as opposed to Remender).

Quick question - is the Bring on the Bad Guys mini set in the past or the present? Wondering because it seems strange to feature Doom in it while One World Under Doom is going on.

Hi Tom,

That illustrated Fred Hembeck letter is delightful! Is there any place were one could go to read the others you mentioned?

I wonder how it will be told? Does it build up to anything? Is it something the characters have to learn? Do they already know? It's intriguing.

My question is about communication during the transition between Krakoa and FtA. Several writers have expressed that they didn’t know exactly how Krakoa would end even as they were scripting their books for FtA, which is why, for example, Storm’s no longer with Craig Marshall and Magneto (this is one I’m personally disappointed about, ngl) doesn’t appear to be carrying his resolution that he’s going to fight for all oppressed people forward in any way. From the outside, it feels like this is a situation that could have been resolved with a few email exchanges between writers. Was this just something that was overlooked or was it a choice to create more narrative distance between Krakoa and FtA?

To be fair, Hickman also ignored everything that had happened in the books before Krakoa, which was pretty disappointing, because it was really, really weird to see all those mutants not only living in harmony with villains like Apocalypse, but having them as their leaders. It was so out of character. So I guess it's time for Krakoa fans to just enjoy the current ride. In a few years it will all be just one of many other X-Men runs.

Hickman and other Krakoa writers referred to past events constantly. I’m sorry for being glib with my other reply but there’s a difference between the story proceeding from a premise you don’t like (everyone chose to honor and respect the amnesty agreement) and ignoring past history, which Krakoa straight up didn’t do. You don’t have to like anything I like, but let’s keep stuff straight.

There are a ton of things from the previous runs that weren't addressed by Hickman and the other writers. It was like a blank slate. It was like the characters were in an alternate universe, as their actions were completely ooc and there was no mention of why they decided to bury their legacy of heroism and turn into villains. I'm sure Brevoort agrees with me, so there's that. I'm just happy that my favorite characters are heroes again.

Hello, Tom. I hope you're having a great week. My question is about the Phoenix. Ever since AvX, or a little bit before, the Phoenix force has been used so much that it's become a really, really confusing trope. In AvX, it was a force of death and resurrection as opposed to Wanda's chaos magic. Then it had some connection to Iron Fist and Kun-Lun, then there was a red-haired Phoenix woman in prehistory, then it became sort of a prize in a tournament with heroes and anti-heroes, and Echo was the winner, becoming the new host. So somehow the Phoenix had some connection to Echo's sacred ancestors. Then the Phoenix was Thor's mother or something, because she and Odin were lovers... quite sure I'm forgetting something. Then Hope was a fragment of the Phoenix and Jean was her "father." Then we finally find out that Jean has always been the Phoenix and the Phoenix has always been Jean. I mean, it's so confusing. What is and what isn't canon at this point?

Hello again Tom. I wanted to ask about when you became aware of the "comic writer." I distinctly remember thinking whoever was drawing also did the writing and was unaware there was a job for writers. When did you realize that separation and what writer do you remember distinctly being someone you liked?

Quick question re the Epting/Perkins Cap run:I always thought that they worked separately. Some pages would be all Epting, some all Perkins?

I forget why I came to think that because I weakly recollect initially thinking Perkins was inking Epting then for some reason I can’t begin to recall, I no longer thought that.
